You can identify most coastal wildlife on the South Coast of New South Wales without ever seeing the animal clearly. Grey kangaroos and wallabies differ in posture, tail and track shape, and each leaves a distinct pattern in grass and sand. How can I tell a grey kangaroo from a wallaby on a trail?
Start with posture. An eastern grey kangaroo stands tall and upright, with a small head and long, heavy tail that rests on the ground like a fifth limb. A wallaby, usually a red-necked or swamp wallaby in this region, keeps its head lower, its back rounded and its tail carried closer to the body. The size gap is real but unreliable at distance, because a young kangaroo and a large wallaby overlap.
Look at the face. A grey kangaroo has a broad muzzle with a bare patch between the nostrils and the lip. A wallaby has a narrower face and a darker line running from the nose toward the eye. The ears tell the same story: long and open on the kangaroo, shorter and more rounded on the wallaby.
On the ground, read the tracks. A kangaroo foot leaves a long central toe print with two smaller side toes set well behind, and the tail drag mark is often absent because the animal carries it clear of the ground at speed. Droppings are the second sign. Wombat scats are cube-shaped, dark and about the size of a large olive. They are usually deposited on a flat rock, a log or a patch of bare ground near the burrow, sometimes in small piles. The shape is unusual among mammals and hard to confuse with anything else.
Koalas are harder to see but not hard to detect. Their claws leave parallel scratch marks on smooth-barked trunks, often in sets of three or four running vertically up the tree. A regularly used tree carries a dark, stained patch at the base of the trunk where the animal climbs, and the bark may be rubbed smooth. Koala droppings are small, firm and cylindrical, and they collect at the foot of a preferred tree rather than being scattered. The laughing kookaburra is identified by sound before sight. Its call is a loud, rolling cackle that starts low and rises, often delivered by several birds together at dawn and dusk. The bird itself is stocky, pale below and brown above, with a heavy straight bill and a dark eye stripe. It hunts from a low perch and drops onto prey, so it is often seen on fence posts, wires and low branches rather than in the canopy.
Rosellas are identified by colour pattern. The eastern rosella has a bright red head and breast, white cheek patches, a yellow-green back and a blue shoulder and tail. The crimson rosella is deep crimson with blue cheeks, wings and tail. Both fly with a fast, undulating pattern and a sharp, metallic call of two or three notes. They feed on the ground on seeds and in flowering eucalypts, and they are common in parks, gardens and road verges.
The black cockatoos are the largest and the loudest. The yellow-tailed black cockatoo is dark brown-black with a yellow panel in the tail and a yellow patch on the cheek, and its call is a drawn-out, wailing cry that carries a long way. The glossy black cockatoo is smaller and darker, with a red or orange tail panel in the male, and it is tied closely to she-oak stands. What signs are worth checking at a water source?
Creeks, dams and soaks concentrate evidence. Look at the mud margin for tracks, and read them in the same order every time: number of toes, shape of the pad, depth of the print, direction of travel. Kangaroo and wallaby prints are the most common, but wombat prints show five toes on the front foot and a broad, flat pad. Bird tracks are thinner and often paired with droppings.
Check the vegetation as well. Wallabies and wombats browse hard on regrowth, producing a trimmed line at a consistent height. Koalas leave their preferred food trees with stripped outer branches and chewed leaf stems beneath. None of this requires seeing the animal, and all of it is repeatable on the next visit.
How should you record what you find?
Write down the location, the time, the weather and the sign itself, then photograph it with something for scale. A coin, a boot or a hand works. Note whether the sign is fresh or old: fresh scats are dark and moist, old ones pale and dry, and fresh scratch marks show pale wood beneath the bark.
Keep distance from burrows and from any animal you do find. Do not block a burrow entrance, do not handle wildlife, and report injured animals to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation service rather than attempting to move them yourself. Signs are the safer and often the more reliable way to know what lives on a trail.
Reading a river works the same way as reading a shoreline.
